TONIC - Tonal Innovation Center project was coordinated by North Karelia University of Applied Sciences (NKUAS) and funded by the European Social Fund (ESF).

The specific aim of the TONIC was to encourage the economic development of Finnish enterprises by employing 350 people and creating about 65 million euros in annual revenue by 2025. NFC technology allows manufactures of musical instruments an ethical and ecological material alternative, attracting global trade and addressing climate concerns. NFC is an alternative recyclable option to the endangered wood species and has the desired excellent tonal quality, proper look and feel, and idealdurability for musical instruments.

The TONIC project worked with international and Finnish companies, as well as public operators like educational institutions, that are interested in cooperating to develop the North Karelia region as a center of excellence for musical instruments and acoustic-based products and services. Researching and improving modern production techniques and systems environmentally and with ethical long-termsolutions were the target in order to develop the skills and resources to design, test, manufacture, and market items according to international quality standards.

The TONIC project supported and boosted North Karelia's already active involvement in using naturalfiber composites (NFCs with its musical instrument design, production, and music know-how).
